Foreign Equivalency

As a rule, in the US, an evaluation agency that is a member of one of more of the organizations that follow is generally recognized by employers or other colleges.  However, some employers and colleges use other criteria and a prospective student should always check with his or her employer or college to insure that he or she will meet their specific standards.

Most militaries require that foreign attained degrees be evaluated* and apostilled to be considered US equivalent. The JMU degree is granted by a foreign based degree granting institution that is Nationally accredited by the Higher Education Commission of Liberia. The "accreditation" of the degree is considered when transferring credits from one educational institution to another.  However , "evaluation" of the degree falls in the realm of the Geneva Hague Convention which specifies which countries are able to be apostilled and evaluated for US equivalency. JMU provides the apostille service and will assist with finding the most appropriate evaluation agency to fit your needs. It is highly recommended that alumni with these specific needs give consideration to commitment of the investment in this process to ensure acceptance.
