Individualized Curriculum Programs Requirements

Each Module consists of a set of courses of no more than 3 credits, except lab courses which may be awarded no more than 4 credits.

BACHELORS DEGREES

Curriculum Requirements

1. General Psychology l-ll

6 credits: Provided by JMU faculty as required courses for the Bachelors Degree.

2. Life Strategies and Goal Setting l-ll

6 credits: Provided by JMU faculty as required courses for the Bachelors Degree.

3. MODULE 1

Introduction to Self-Designed Learning- 12 credits: this is the first module by learning contract. Students prepare a learning contract that provides for learning experiences at the introductory level of the major area or field of study. Students are awarded three, 6-semester hour courses for completion.

4. MODULE 2

Fundamentals of Self-Designed Learning : 12 credits: this module focuses on intermediate-level knowledge acquisition and experiential learning for the student's major area or field of study. Students complete a learning contract for this module and carry out the process for meeting the contract goals. Students are awarded three, 6-semester hour courses for completion.

5. MODULE 3

Intermediate Concepts in Self-Designed Learning: 20 credits: this module allows for the development of a learning contract which focuses on a continuation of learning at the intermediate level, and/or the initiation of learning of more complex theories, concepts, knowledge related to the students major area of study. Students are awarded five, 6 -semester hour courses for completion.

6. MODULE 4

Advanced Learning Process: 30 credits: this module focuses on the advanced subject content, theories or experiential learning related to the students selected area of study. The learning contract at this module level is more involved and requires demonstration of higher learning achievements with evidence of beginning advanced analysis and synthesis of the learning process. Students are awarded five, 6-semester hour courses for completion.

7. MODULE 5

Synthesis and Application: 30 credits: this final module focuses on the students ability to develop a learning contract that provides for high-level analysis and synthesis of the subject matter. Students will contract to produce a major scholarly paper or project related to their major area of study. Students are awarded five, 6-semester hour courses for completion.

MASTERS DEGREES

Curriculum Requirements

3. MODULE 1

Advanced Concepts in Self-Designed Learning: 16 credits: this course focuses on continuation of study for those who have an earned bachelor's degree already. Here the student elects a major area of study and demonstrates learning of advanced concepts, theories and experiential processes related to their chosen major area of study. Students are awarded 4, 4-semester hour courses upon completion.

4. MODULE 2

Advanced Concepts in Self-Designed Learning, Part 2, : 16 credits. Students continue via learning contract to study and master knowledge in their chosen field of study. Students are required to show mastery of learning at the graduate degree level. Students are awarded 4, 4-semester hour courses upon completion.

5. MODULE 3

Mastery in Self-Designed Learning: 16 credits. Students are required to develop a learning contract toward independent study/research of a focus topic related to the major area of concentration and produce a scholarly paper or graduate project. Students are awarded 4, 4-semester hour courses upon achieving the goals and objectives of the learning contract.

PhD/Doctorate Degrees

Curriculum Requirements

1.The Philosophy of Self l-ll

6 credits: Provided by JMU faculty as required courses.

2. MODULE 1

Scholarly Writing and Research: 10 credits: Provided by JMU faculty as required courses.

3. MODULE 3

Advanced Study Design: 20 credits: this module focuses on study/learning of advanced concepts related to the major area of study/focus, beyond the masters degree level. Students will demonstrate via their learning contract, the ability to provide high level analysis and application to the materials studied. Students are awarded 4, 5-semester hour courses for completion of this module.

4. MODULE 4

Scholarly Synthesis and Application- 30 credits. Students prepare a learning contract that culminates in presentation of a doctoral dissertation or a major scholarly project and paper. Within the learning contract, the student designs the structure for the dissertation/project proposal and the actual development of the dissertation or scholarly write-up of the doctoral level project. Students are awarded 20 credits of credit for this module. Students are given 12 months to complete this module, but may complete it in a shorter time frame.
