Academic Advising

SU Advising Philosophy

The academic advising services at SU play a key role in the facilitation of student growth and development. The primary purpose of advising is to assist students in the development of meaningful educational plans that are compatible with their career/life goals. Advising has the potential to be a powerful educational intervention which can greatly improve the quality of education experienced by students.

Advising is an important extension of the teaching/learning process. The advising of students by faculty is a significant aspect of the personalized education experience SU seeks to offer its undergraduate students.

The most influential factor in determining advisee satisfaction with the advising process is the quality of the advisor/advisee relationship. The advising relationship between an advisor and a student is a shared one. The ultimate responsibility for making decisions about goals and educational plans rests with the individual student. The advisor facilitates the studentís decision-making process and helps to identify and assess alternatives and the consequences of decisions. Frequency and length of advisor contact are important variables in quality advising. Those involved in the provision of advising services should be properly trained, evaluated and rewarded.
