Linear Collider R&D Group at Fermilab

Introduction

How might one structure a national research and development effort to build a Linear Collider? Perhaps the various initiatives could be organized into working groups, each with its focus on a particular detector or accelerator system. A second way could be to group R&D efforts according to which funding agency was providing support for each of the participating institutions. A third way would be to organize geographically, based on each research group's orientation towards a particular national lab.

These three possibilities are illustrated schematically in the following diagram.

No matter what organizational structure is ultimately chosen, it will be important for all its components to communicate effectively in order to avoid duplication of effort and inefficient use of resources.

The Linear Collider R&D Group at Fermilab (the name is provisional and is likely to be changed) comprises a set of university and laboratory groups organizing to submit a Linear Collider research and development proposal to the Department of Energy before the end of 2002.

Ongoing discussions with colleagues pursuing LC studies at other national labs and through other regional initiatives are aimed at producing a set of proposals to initiate a substantial and coherent national R&D effort, funded in part by the Department of Energy and National Science Foundation.
